Gehrmans Musikforlag

As a leading importer of classical sheet music from Scandinavia, Elkin Music International is proud to distribute the Gehrmans Musikforlag classical sheet music catalog. Gehrmans Muiskforlag, an outstanding firm among international music publishers, was founded in 1893 by twenty-year-old Carl Gehrman, who published mostly popular genres of the time. In 1930 Carl Gehrmans Musikforlag was bought by Inge and Einar Rosenborg. Although popular music was still the cornerstone of the company, orchestral music was becoming an integral part of the business as well. During the 1930’s and 1940’s, works of many contemporary composers, such as Lars-Erik Larsson, Hugo Alfven and Dag Wiren were added to the company’s classical sheet music catalog. Also during this time, choral music became an important component of Gehrmans Musikforlag’s publications of classical sheet music.

In 1950 the Rosenborgs established a Foundation to secure the future of Gehrmans Musikforlag as a publisher of classical sheet music, and the Foundation is the main owner of the company today. During the 1950s, following the establishment of the Foundation, Gehrmans Musikforlag began adding educational materials to its classical sheet music catalog, with Carl-Bertil Agnestig as the most prominent pedagog. It’s growing line of educational material complemented the publisher’s concentration in choral, chamber and orchestral classical sheet music. Today the Gehrmans classical sheet music catalog represents many of the premier composers and music pedagogues in Sweden. Besides composers already mentioned, Gehrmans publishes works by Erland von Koch, Daniel Bortz, Hans Eklund, Fredrik Hogberg, Maurice Karkoff, Thomas Jennefelt, and Nils Lindberg, just to name a few.

In July 1999, the merger of Gehrmans Musikforlag and Sveriges Korforbunds Forlag resulted in what is considered to be the most substantial Scandinavian choral catalog and a major component of Gehrmans Musikforlag’s line of classical sheet music. Further expansion in the company’s classical sheet music publishing were carried out in 2007 when Gehrmans acquired the orchestral, chamber, and choral music catalogs of Warner/Chappell Music Scandinavia. Warner/Chappell Music’s classical sheet music catalog included the publications of Nordiska Musikforlaget with compositions by Allan Pettersson, Eduard Tubin, Ingvar Lidholm, Sven-David Sandstrom and Anders Eliasson, among others. The Finnish classical sheet music catalog of Warner/Chappell Music Finland, including Edition Fazer was also acquired by Gehrmans Musikforlag, and to manage this classical sheet music catalog successfully a new company, Fennica Gehrman OY, was founded in Finland. This subsidiary’s task is to continue the co-operation with the leading Finnish composers and publish their new works.

Through these acquisitions and changes, and with collaborations with Air Chrysalis Scandinavia and Universal Music Publishing, Gehrmans has established itself as one of the leading classical sheet music publishers in Scandinavia. Musicians interested in Scandinavian music and who buy classical sheet music online will find a wealth of resources in this fine catalog. Many of their publications will be found in the online classical sheet music store at Elkin Music International, and those not found there can be ordered upon special request
